Year of the dragon, an auspicious time for birth, seen as last chance to avert demographic timebomb guardian.co.uk 23 January 2012 Taiwan’s birth rate is one of the lowest in the world. Taipei hopes it will be boosted in the year of the dragon. Photograph: Wally Santana/AP It is, says the president, an issue that threatens Taiwan’s very existence. Authorities are mustering every weapon to see the problem off: from money to Chinese astrology and blind dates for its citizens. The island’s plummeting birth rate is one of the lowest in the world, experts say, prompting a warning from the president himself, Ma Ying-jeou, that it is “a serious national security threat”. [FULL STORY]

Taiwan Today 01/08/2012 By Rachel Chan After they become mothers, many women are faced with a difficult and painful choice: whether to continue working, or to quit their jobs and become full-time moms. A lucky few are able to have their cake and eat it too. They create, much to their surprise, entirely new careers out of their own parenting experiences. One such figure is Chen An-yi, who in 2006 resigned from her seemingly glamorous job to care for her son, who had just turned 1, and her 4-year-old daughter. Little did she know that becoming a full-time mother would not only spice up her family life, but also lead her to create an entirely new business catering especially to mothers and their young ones. [FULL STORY]

Houston Chronicle Aug. 13, 2010 By DAVID KAPLAN Simon Lee’s office supply company is growing rapidly. His EIS Office Solutions will take in about $6 million in revenue this year. The company has grown with an unusual business model: Lee gives half his profits to the needy. A native of Taiwan, he moved with his family to Houston at age 8. He has been passionate about helping the poor since he joined a Christian missionary group at the University of Texas at Austin when he was 19. After college he worked at his father’s Houston-based wholesale office supply business while doing missionary work in Africa, South America and Asia. Six years ago he opened EIS Office Solutions, which from the start has donated half of its profits to charitable causes. Most donations go to Houston’s Aid Sudan and Star of Hope. It has 15 employees and ships to all 50 states and Canada. It also makes local deliveries. Customers include the state of Mississippi, Houston Independent School District, the Kolache Factory and nonprofit groups. Lee spoke with the Chronicle’s David Kaplan about his decision to fuse his business with his faith. more …

The China Post July 21, 2010 TAIPEI — The winner of NT$480 million in a lottery drawing has finally claimed the jackpot after agonizing over the decision for 55 days because she feared she would meet the same sorry fate as lotto winners she read about in foreign countries. The NT$480-million jackpot in the April 8 lottery was an accumulation of the prize money rolled over from eight previous drawings without a winner, and its sole winner was a woman from Taipei City, Taiwan Lottery President Huang Chih-yi said. The woman is married with two children. Both she and her husband are public servants. more …
