The Wall Street Journal January 25, 2012 East Asia’s cinephiles won’t have a local favorite to cheer during this year’s foreign-language Academy Awards race after the Taiwan epic “Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale” (賽德克‧巴萊) failed to be nominated for best foreign-language film on Tuesday. Last week, the 4-1/2-hour film — based on the true story of Taiwan’s indigenous Seediq tribes who launched an armed uprising against Japanese rule in 1930 — was among nine films short-listed for the foreign-language category. [FULL STORY]

KpopStarz January 23, 2012 by KpopStarz Reporter Super Junior has had yet another sign that they have power outside where they are from. In the news in Taiwan, a restaurant felt the need to get a complete renovation due to the fact that the group will be visiting the island country very shortly. The restaurant is decorated with a number of different collections of merchandise from the group’s earlier promotion for their former single “Mr. Simple.” They even went as far as putting up Super Junior’s freshly pressed SS4 Taiwan posters. The group will be making an appearance in Taiwan to perform four shows from February 2nd to the 5th at the Taipei Arena, which is for the ‘Super Show 4’ World Tour. [FULL STORY]

Zhang Yimou’s “The Flowers of War” with Christian Bale, other East Asian contenders snubbed. The Hollywood Warrior 1/19/2012 The Year of the Dragon could be a good one for Taiwan director Wei Te-sheng, whose rebellion epic Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale was the only film from East Asia to find itself on the Academy’s best foreign-language film Oscar shortlist Wednesday. our editor recommends Noticeably absent among Asia’s contenders is Zhang Yimou’s The Flowers of War starring Oscar winner Christian Bale, China’s most expensive production to date and its highest-grossing Chinese film for 2011. Zhang was looking for his fourth foreign-language film nomination and his first nod with his Rape of Nanjing story. [FULL STORY]

The Gazette January 9, 2012 By Katherine Monk, Postmedia News NEW TAIPEI CITY, Taiwan — A sea of schoolchildren pours out of buses and spills into the main road of an occupied village. Wearing iPods and carrying digital cameras, some eddy around the home of the Japanese commander, while others form a standing wave outside a store offering facial tattoos and bone earrings. As a gaggle of giggling girls in kimonos strafes the cappuccino stand, the tour guide draws our attention to the bullet holes in the windows: “They are there from the attack,” he says, struggling to find the right words in English. “You can see it in the movie.” There’s no need for clarification. Here in New Taipei City, there is only one movie worth talking about: Seediq Bale. [FULL STORY]

Taipei Times Jan 09, 2012 By Benjamin Yeh / AFP, TAIPEI As a long career devoted to Taiwan’s technology sector draws to a close, Maxima Capital Management Inc (麥實國際管顧) chairman Max Fang (方國健) has turned to an entirely new task — helping to build a globally competitive film industry in Taiwan. To this end, the 60-year-old Fang has launched a venture capital fund, much as he would do if he were to pour money into new information technology (IT) start-ups, but solely meant for movie and TV projects. [FULL STORY]
