Taipei, July 25 (CNA) A Taiwanese toxic substance expert on Wednesday urged the legislature to set stricter safety standards than what’s accepted internationally for the leanness-enhancing additive ractopamine as the Legislative Yuan passed legislation on lifting a ban on U.S. beef containing the drug.
Lin Chieh-liang, a toxicologist at Linkuo Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, said while it is possible that Taiwan’s ractopamine residue safety standards will follow international standards, there should be other measures implemented, and the government should stipulate stricter regulations than what is accepted internationally.
