TAIPEI, Taiwan — A female Chinese tourist, among missing members of a Chinese tour group, yesterday was confirmed dead following DNA tests of a body part found on Monday from waters off the coast of northeastern Taiwan, according to the Yilan District Prosecutors’ Office.

“DNA tests carried out by the Institute of Forensic Medicine under the Ministry of Justice confirmed that the body part belonged to that of Gong Yen, a member of a Chinese tour group managed by Taiwan’s Harula Tour Travel Service,” said Lin Jhe-hui, a chief prosecutor at the Yilan County prosecution office.

Gong was a member of a 19-member tour group from China’s Guangdong Province, which was last known to be traveling on the Sauo-Hualien (Suhua) Highway on Oct. 2l when the major cliff-top route overlooking the Pacific Ocean was hit by rockslides amid heavy downpours brought by Typhoon Megi.    [FULL  STORY]
