Routine Overcall Proves Unexpectedly Costly

The 5th World University Championship was played in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, from Aug. 2 to 9.

Fourteen teams from 10 countries competed in a round robin of 16-board matches. The United States sent two teams: Victor Chubukov, Zhihao Liu (called Howard), Kevin Dwyer, Owen Lien, Jeremy Fournier and Roger Lee (U.S.A.-A); and Charles Alex Hudson, John Marriott, Cameron Shunta and Mitch Towner (U.S.A.-B). Mike Cappalletti Jr. was the nonplaying captain for both teams.

Poland, the pre-tournament favorite, won with a round to spare. France was second, Israel third, U.S.A.-A fourth (four victory points behind Israel and out of the medals) and U.S.A.-B seventh.

The biggest swing of the tournament occurred in the diagramed deal, Board 7 of the match between Germany-B and U.S.A.-B.

Towner (West) had to pass on the first round because double would have been negative. But when Shunta (East) reopened with a takeout double, West was happy to pass.

The defense was perfect, aided by one slip from declarer. West led the diamond king and continued with his second diamond. East took his ace and shifted to the spade queen.    [FULL  STORY]
