TAIPEI — Taiwan and China opened their first joint travel fair in Taipei Friday to boost tourism exchanges amid warming bilateral ties.
Taiwan lifted its ban on Chinese tour groups in 2008 after President Ma Ying-jeou from the China-friendly Chinese Nationalist Party took office, and is planning to open its door to individual tourists from China in 2011.
The joint travel fair was planned to be the first of an annual event, called Cross-Straits Travel, as relations improve between Taipei and Beijing, which has historically considered Taiwan a breakaway province.
China sent a 1,200-strong delegation to the four-day fair, held at the Taipei World Trade Center, to encourage Taiwan residents to visit the mainland. more …
