TAIPEI — The Central Emergency Operation Center opened yesterday to brace for possible disasters after central and southern Taiwan were hit by torrential downpours.
Shih Tseng-kang, director of the National Disaster Prevention and Protection Office under the Executive Yuan, said the center will accept requests for help from local governments for disaster prevention and relief.
Shih said Vice Premier Sean C. Chen, who serves concurrently as head of the National Disaster Prevention and Protection Commission under the Executive Yuan, ordered the inauguration of the center that day at the request of Minister of the Interior Jiang Yi-huah and Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-shiang.
Noting that more than 20 weather stations around the island had recorded precipitation of more than 200 millimeters — the benchmark for single-day torrential rain — as of 10 a.m. that day, Shih said his office has maintained close contact with the Water Resources Agency and the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau. more …
