Last PFP lawmaker loses seat after vote-buying verdict

Taiwan News
2010-07-28

Lin Cheng-er, the only lawmaker for the People First Party, was to lose his seat yesterday as the Taiwan High Court annulled his election after accusations of vote buying.

The verdict, which cannot be appealed, confirmed a ruling by the Taoyuan District Court last November. Lin was accused of spending NT$13,800 (US$430) at a seafood restaurant in Taoyuan County in November 2007, shortly before Legislative Yuan elections. He invited voters to the meal and handed out campaign jackets while asking them to vote for him, reports said.

Lin said he would ask his attorney to ask for a ruling from the Council of Grand Justices because prosecutors had waited too long to indict him, causing doubt about the constitutionality of the court verdicts.
